The Smithsonian workshop was titled “No Place Like Home: Borders and Neighborhood Identity.” Students related the exhibition El Rio to their own sense of place in Washington's Columbia Heights neighborhood.
Students read poems about home by George Ella Lyon and Gary Soto. They used these as models for their own poems about their community.
