National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., and New York City
|

 |
This special two-city exhibition is the largest and most comprehensive retrospective of the works of Scholder (1937–2005). The Washington component puts particular emphasis on his groundbreaking and controversial “Indian paintings” from the 1960s and 1970s. At the George Gustav Heye Center in New York (One Bowling Green, Manhattan) the focus is on his works from the 1980s and 1990s, when he had ceased using overt Indian imagery and turned to mythology, the afterlife, and the unknown. |
