An intricate example of classic Chinese architecture, the Forbidden City's Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion was constructed in the fifteenth century as part of the private pleasure grounds of the emperor. A model of the structure has been donated to the Smithsonian by the China Red Sandalwood Museum of Beijing. It not only captures the beauty of the original, but is also, in itself, an outstanding example of traditional Chinese carving. The exhibition includes some of the carving tools.
