The Brass Letters of Citizenship: Lincoln, African Americans, and Military Service
Tuesday,  February  23 , 7 pm
National Museum of American History, Carmichael Auditorium

A panel of scholars discuss the military’s expansion to include African Americans during the Civil War. The moderator is Tom Bowman, Pentagon correspondent for National Public Radio. The panel includes Ira Berlin of the University of Maryland and Chandra Manning of Georgetown, both experts on the African American military experience in the mid-nineteenth century, and Nathaniel Frank of the University of California, Santa Barbara, author of the book Unfriendly Fire. Frank compares nineteenth-century arguments surrounding the racial expansion with modern arguments surrounding the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The event is part of the museum’s Abraham Lincoln Lecture Series.
