The Smithsonian’s orchestra-in-residence performs some of Benny Carter’s best-known compositions, such as “When Lights Are Low” and “Blues in My Heart.” Carter, an alto saxophonist, was widely regarded as a principal architect of the big band swing style. In addition, he was one of the first African Americans to compose and arrange music for films and TV. Carter died in 2003. He would have been one hundred this year. Tickets required.
