Presidential Firsts: Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was known for his honesty and fairness, though, ironically, some people felt that he won because of falsified ballot returns. He won by just one electoral vote. As president, he helped heal the wounds of the Civil War by removing the last federal troops from the South. Hayes was the first president to have a telephone in the White House and the first to have a typewriter. He chose not to run for a second term and worked actively for social causes in his retirement.
