This teaching guide focuses on three movements—populism, civil rights, and environmentalism—as it examines a seeming paradox in American history: a long tradition of social transformation. The three movements, differing in many details, are seen here as exemplars of what all successful American movements have in common. All called for limited change (reform rather than revolution) and set concrete goals (clean air legislation, for example). The guide includes teaching suggestions, timelines, and “case studies” for student reading.
